Six people meet for the first time in an abandoned house in Athens. Seeing things with new eyes, together they embark on a path of discovery of unspoken things that bind them together.
Omphalos follows them along this archetypal journey — their encounter, the experience of their intrinsic weaknesses and their breakdown, leading to their acceptance and respect of nature and commitment to create further.
Standing alone in our presence — quite as we all do — with every gesture they carry something sacred.
Omphalos begins with a hieratic representation of sacredness as a very physical state of reverence. This grows in dynamism when the characters start projecting the understanding of the human mind on earth and the places they choose to live in.
A sacred world accompanies them; strikes them by its power, by beauty and cruelty; and through them emerges into peace, a human condition that is both prosperous and preserving. It is peace that allows the characters to relate to the unknown and the supernatural in a human way — creatively.
Omphalos blends a documentary approach with a hyper-real, almost abstract fictionalism. Events pushing reality to unseen boundaries are grounded by concrete emotional content which the film almost neutrally documents.
The result is a model for a reality in the image of a theme — sacredness — which perhaps is today more relevant than ever.
